Almost Two Million Mobile WiMAX Subscribers Expected by End of 2009 - ABI Research

Mobile WiMax subscribers are expected to reach 2 million by the end of 2009, according to a recent report from ABI Research. WiMax’s subscriber numbers are rising, but the picture is quite mixed, according to the report.

Clearwire, the majority share of which is owned by Sprint Nextel, now claims 173,000 subscribers, while Russia’s Yota reached 200,000 in October and PackOne, in Malaysia, claims 130,000 subscribers. Japan’s UQ Communications, however, is behind on its rollout, and in South Korea, subscriber numbers have stagnated, ABI reports.

“Mobile WIMax service providers around the world find themselves in very different situations,” wrote Philip Solis, an ABI analyst and WiMAX360 member.

“Some (operators) are mainly focused on fixed services for homes and businesses, while others are jumping feet first into mobile WiMax, offering a variety of external modems, laptops, netbooks and even handsets tied into HD multimedia services, as with Yota in Russia,” Solis continued. “Some have little fixed or mobile broadband competition, while others are competing directly against fixed and mobile broadband services.”

ABI Research will offer a 4G research service that will likely compete with Maravedis WiMAX Counts. A description of the service is at:

XJ Wang, marketing director for the WiMAX Forum, said there are now 540 WiMAX network deployments in 146 countries around the world--and more than 150 deployments in the Americas alone--an update intended to show the technology's progress to attendees of the WiMAX Forum Americas 2009 conference

Wang said there are now about 10 million WiMAX subscribers worldwide, indicating that the technology is moving from niche to mass market. In addition, he said that there are 165 WiMAX Forum certified products available.

Dear deepak kumar sharma

In future posts, please check your English grammer and don't use so many abbreviations, e.g. ur blog is gr8.
We are not use text messages on this web site.

You need to do a lot more research on your own before you ask such general questions as you've posed. After you do that, please repost your very specific questions in the Discussion Forum

Alan, the WIMAC Forum now claims 10.2m WIMAX subs at the end of 2009. They are not splitting this number between mobile and fixed, but I doubt that fixed alone acounts for the 8m delta. Any idea what causes the difference in sub count, other than the Forum's natural desire for a big number?

Paul,

I think the WiMAX Forum greatly exaggerates all numbers they publish with respect to WiMAX. I believe they count pre-WiMAX and proprietary "WiMAX like" BWA in their numbers. However, I am not a member of the WiMAX Forum and thus don't have access to any of their information that is not made public.

In my latest post related to WiMAX Forum numbers, I don't see any statement on total number of WiMAX subs.
