NEC and Arraycomm to co-operate on WiMAX Product Development- will it succeed?

On January 16, 2009, NEC Corporation and ArrayComm LLC announced a collaboration to develop new WiMAX products that include NEC's PasoWings base station and ArrayComm’s A-MAS(TM) multi-antenna signal processing software. The joint effort is targerted at delivering WiMAX base station products beginning mid-2009.



NEC states that its PasoWings platform, "brings development, manufacturing, system integration, and field installation expertise into the joint effort."

There is a lot of disinformation being spread in the WiMAX community about my subject of today, beamforming, and about other advanced RF technologies such as MIMO. Where are the WiMAX MIDs hiding?

We noted the absence of major vendor MID announcements at CES. Based on our Jan 08 IEEE ComSoc meeting presentation (Internet in Your Pocket presentation by Rama Shukla of Intel), we were expecting a raft of WiMAX capable MIDs to be announced at CES. We were disappointed.

It appears that the Foggy weather in Delhi extends to much more than just atmosphere, certainly to the Foggy Policies and to the ministries of Telecom and Finance. The Ministry of Finance has recommended the doubling of the reserve prices to $ 8 Billion for 3G and $ 4 Billion for WiMAX. Even though such events are quite common to policy watchers and hardly ruffle any feathers, this one takes the cake for a number of reasons.

Alvarion Wins Italian Nationwide WiMAX Contract- do they now own the WiMAX equipment market?

Cellular News reports that Alvarion won a contract to supply its 4Motion-based WiMAX technology to 13 regions of Italy representing about 80% of the country. The contract is with Linkem SpA, a major WiMAX license holder in Italy and one of the country's largest providers of wireless broadband.

WiMAX in Latin America

There are a few small scale deployments of WiMAX already in Latin America, but spectrum remains an issue, especially in the biggest country in South America, Brasil ("Brazil" to English speakers).

LTE Field Trials Move Forward, while timing of global WiMAX deployments is uncertain

Ericsson maxes out speeds in LTE field tests



In field trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE), the ITU based "4G" mobile technology, Ericsson has surpassed speeds of 100 Mbps, the company said. Using four transmit streams (the maximum number supported in the LTE standard), four receive antennas and bandwidth of 10 MHz, the measured peak rates exceeded 130M bps. WiMAX and 3G in India Delayed Again!

The sorry saga of WiMAX in India continues. We think India is vitally important to the health of the mobile WiMAX industry as it is potentially the largest emerging market for that technology. China has shown no interest in WiMAX and is pursuing their homegrown 3G technology instead. So that leaves India as the kingpin for WiMAX deployment in developing markets.
