The major wireless network operators are determined to ensure that future broadband wireless technologies are optimized for their commercial needs. The most powerful body coordinating the operators' activities is the
NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) Alliance. It numbers 18 carrier members and works with a wide range of other bodies. When it was first formed, it seemed to be a force for unity across the industry, able to support more than one access network technology, and bring…

Having just analyzed recent reports from telecom companies, we conclude that the telecom recession/ depression continues. Revenues are falling way short of expectation, growth is limited to mobile data, and profits are miniscule with the exception of Verizon (VZ). But even at VZ, the growth seems to be coming almost entirely from new wireless data services for mobile subscribers, while customer installations for FiOS seem to be stalling (despite the huge build-out cost and heavy promotion).…

Will this deal get done with ATT against it, while WCA endorses it?
AT&T asks FCC to deny Sprint-Clearwire merger
AT&T has asked the FCC to deny the planned merger between Sprint Nextel's WiMAX business and Clearwire. The operator, which has the largest subscriber base in the U.S., argued that the venture would eventually use spectrum leased from schools, cities and nonprofits and that the spectrum hasn't been fully accounted for in the proposed merger.…

As we predicted in our
Sidecut Report on WiMax, the "new" Clearwire deal, with its heavy-hitter lineup of investors and their $3.2 billion in capital, was sure to attract the attention of the big telcos, namely AT&T and Verizon. In our predictions we guessed that the big telcos would turn up the heat on Clearwire any way they could, and today it looks like we were right since AT&T…

This article examines the potential Internet collapse due to the increasing amounts of bandwidth being consumed by video apps and not enough fiber deployment by the telcos. But what about the last mile? Will WiMAX used for fixed BWA be a potential solution to the access bandwidth bottleneck?

Even though he's busy managing day-to-day operations for the "old" Clearwire as he also works on integration issues for the "new" Clearwire and its planned nationwide WiMax network, Clearwire CEO Ben Wolff still found time to talk to Sidecut Reports for a mid-summer update this week. The broadband wireless access (BWA) market was rapidly approaching the two million subscriber mark at the end of March 2008, according to market research firm Maravedis. Subscribers to broadband wireless services grew over 260,000 during the first three months of the year, which would have seen the 2 million mark surpassed during the first week of April. The online service tracks BWA and WiMAX operators.

Verizon again has been saying the LTE is their 4G answer for wireless broadband and WiMAX is not ready for Prime Time. You can bet on more criticism from the large GSM companies on how WiMAX is destined for emerging backhaul applications only and its not a a true mobile technology. The WiMAX forum should hit this head on with a clear marketing message of WiMAX is here, WiMAX is…
